The Center for Development and Continuing Education at the University of Basra organized an online symposium titled “lights on the Iraqi personality”.

The symposium aims to enhance the advantages  of the Iraqi character as a recognized model.

The workshop was presented by Assist. Lecturer H .M. Maatouq. It included an overview of the characteristics of the Iraqi personality within its eastern religious and tribal surroundings and comparing it with the Western personality. The disadvantages of Iraqi characters are: selfishness, violent reactions, verbal abuse, judgment of others, and subjectivity. As the positives are kindness, kinship and ties, social, respect and rescue of the weak and humility.

He quoted Ali Al-Wardi’s conclusion of the Iraqi character as a dualistic character bearing contradictory values, which are the values of Bedouin and the values of civilization. The Iraqi citizen has the duality of dignity and dominance, but his life forces him to deal with reality. Also, he states that the contradiction exists in human beings, but it is recognized stronger in Iraqi people. Finally, the recommendation was to submit a working paper to the Chancellor of Basra University entitled “Our Beautiful Morals”.
