The Center for Development and Continuing Education at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the College of Arts, held an academic workshop titled “The Difference Between Divine Will and Divine Decree in Various Translations of the Holy Qur’an.”
The workshop aimed to clarify the doctrinal and semantic differences between the concepts of irādah (divine will) and mashī’ah (divine decree) in the Qur’anic text, and to explain how translators have handled these two concepts in English translations.
Presented by Lecturer Haitham Mahdi Matouq, the workshop included a theoretical introduction addressing the linguistic and jurisprudential definitions of irādah and mashī’ah, along with a review of perspectives from works of Islamic creed and exegesis.
The workshop recommended clearly distinguishing between the two terms in translation and avoiding literal renderings that may distort doctrinal meaning, particularly in sensitive texts.
