The Continuing Education Center at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the College of Education for Women, organized an online seminar titled “False Memories and Psychological Counseling: Understanding Our Past and Guiding Our Present.”
The seminar aimed to clarify the concept of false memories, distinguish them from genuine recollections, and shed light on the psychological and social factors that contribute to their formation. Through this discussion, participants gained a deeper understanding of how memory distortion occurs and how it can influence personal perceptions and emotional responses.
Presented by Dr. Rafif Abdul-Hafidh Al-Riyahi, along with lecturers Huda Ahmed Alwan and Ruaa Abdul-Imam, the seminar explored the role of psychological counseling in helping individuals cope with distorted or false memories in a healthy and constructive manner. The speakers emphasized strategies counselors can use to reframe such experiences, foster emotional resilience, and promote balanced psychological adjustment—tools that are essential not only in therapy but also in everyday life.
